The Australian Tea Masters Association was founded in Australia to provide mastery level tea training, education and professional tea certification to individuals who want to become Tea Masters and tea sommeliers. The association is licensed to deliver the Certified Tea Master course and is respected as meeting superior educational standards.

‘Certified Tea Master’ is a term which describes a person who has deep knowledge and understanding about all aspects of tea; everything from how it is grown and made to how it is consumed and the cultural practices surrounding it. Tea is a central part of a Certified Tea Master’s life. He or she drinks tea regularly and is passionate about sharing this experience with others.

During the Australian Tea Masters Certified Tea Master course, students learn about tea’s interesting history, the different ways of processing tea to create the diverse variations of flavour and colour between different teas, as well as the affect that terroir has on a tea and the health benefits associated with tea. Students will also learn about the various tea regions, intriguing cultural practices and how to pair tea with food.

In the Australian Tea Masters Certified Tea Master course students will be imbued with the knowledge and confidence to go on to pursue a professional career in the tea world, whether it be to open a tea shop or café, become a tea sommelier, work for a tea company, be involved with tea as a hobby, develop a tea menu or become a Certified Tea Mastery trainer.

The Certified Tea Master course comprises of three days intensive training followed by a structured 14-week online training program using Skype. The course also includes all learning material and specialty teas as well as all professional tools required.

At the completion of this training students will be asked to evaluate a “mystery tea” and take a final exam composing of 106 true-or-false answers and four essay questions. Successful graduates will be honoured with the Certified Tea Master™ qualification and a certificate of completion.

History and characteristics of oolong tea
Types and grades of black tea
Puerh types, manufacture and growing regions
History of chai, manufacture and ingredients
Cultivars and production methods
Cultural service of various teas

Tea and food pairing
Health benefits of tea

Following this course material there is a final exam that must be completed online. Once all course work is complete, and the final exam is passed, students will receive a Certified Tea Master certificate and will be qualified to use the title ‘Certified Tea Master’. Those who complete this training will have the opportunity to join the Australian Tea Masters Association and connect with other tea professionals.
